One thing I have to say about the EC12 even, or maybe especially, when compared even to the other 12's, the A2 and the N12, is that the shape of the EC12 keel is fantastic for sailing in weed infested waters. And don't even consider sailing Marbleheads, 10-Raters, etc whose propensity to catch weed if it is there, must be fantastic in weed inhabited waters, waters in which the EC12 will continue to sail happily for hours on end, even if at times just a tad slower while the weed slips firstly down the swept back keel and then finally away from it completely.
One of the problems as I understand it with the A2 keel was that it tended to catch weeds, lobster pot lines, plastic bags, etc., to which the EC12 keel was largely immune to due to the shape of the keel.
If only the EC12 was a bit easier to sail, it would be the absolute perfect boat.

I threw my IOM into our local pond we sail the 12's on and where I am hosting this years NZ Nats - went about 5' before the weed grabbed it. Now if had my 12 that day it woudl of sailed for hours no problems!!
On behalf of the lake I sincerely thank you for your comments.
But from what I've seen you guys do pretty well.
Cherry Lake is a great sailing venue when it is full, and particularly when there is a southerly a-blowin', but alas, not really deep enough, even when full for the latest breed of M's and 10-Raters.
But, I have never seen it too shallow to sail an EC12, or for that matter, an A2, or an N12 in it. Never!Ever! No matter how dry it has been.
And you know what that means of course, don't you. That simply means that irrespective of what conditions are playing out on the lake, the 12-metres will always be the most suitable boat to sail! I mean, how much better can it get than that? I mean, I simply don't know of a more perfect boat class for all and any conditions that nature cares to throw our way.
And I'm not promoting the 12-metres because of testing conditions. I'm promoting the 12-metres because after experiencing many different types of boats, it was the 12's that won my heart, primarily because of their beauty and secondly because of their versatility. And that was even before the dreaded drought hit our shores.
Gees, I hope the administrator is lenient and doesn't delete this post. I've kinda started to wander off the subject a bit, but nevertheless, it was still related to Cherry Lake.

Well, Cherry Lake pretty much lived up to it's reputation today as being a testing place to sail when there is a north wind a'blowin', however the strength was such that whilst at times it was pretty spectacular, those that turned up today, I think, had a ball!
In fact I would go so fas as to say the boats loved the conditions and being out on the water again, north wind or not, and temperatures around 37 degrees C. It was the skipper's that were tested today, although Keith seemed to weather the conditions better than the others. Pun intended.
I might also add that Keith had the Avalon back in the water again today for the first time, after an extended absence after losing his rudder whilst sailing at Jack Roper Reserve last year. Also the fact that Keith is our newest recruit did not prevent him from building a new rudder from scratch and based purely on the building instructions drawings. A couple of rudder throw adjustments need to be made before the next sail, but a most impressive effort, I must say.
I don't think we will have to worry about the rain. Top temp also forecast around mid-high 30's degrees C and good winds up to 15 knots in the afternoon, even though they are forecast to be north - north/easterly. This could be testing but sometimes Cherry Lake can throw in a real surprise and when you expect it to be windy, it can throw in some really calm water.
Sounds damn good to me. Am really looking forward to a sail, and will be there irrespective of wind direction.
Look forward to seeing you.
Don

Hey guys, and gals, provided I am not tied down at work with end of year accounting stuff, I'm expecting, hoping, to take a little bit of time out from work and to get to Cherry Lake on the Saturday mentioned above for a long long long overdue sail.
Look forward to seeing anybody else who can make it.
