Promotion of Model Yachting in this Country

The Story I sent you is to encourage other little towns in Australia to try the same thing as the one in south coast NSW. The lesson to be learned is this KEEP IT SIMPLE.

I was told by the locals that went and found a little class that they could get , over the counter of the local hobby shop. I asked them why they didn't go for one of the bigger classes and it was surprising to what they said. That they needed a boat that the older folk could handle, it had to be affordable for their limited incomes,  that it had to be sailed in a less than perfect water conditions and it had to look like a boat and had to be at a reasonable price to suit their budgets. They started off with two boats and it just grew, they said. to day they have 18 members. They have been going 2 1/2 years.

I can tell you this Maverick as a cautionary tale. We could not leave town till we joined as Associate members.

Henry, thank you so very much for your comments.

I think you have quite succinctly summarised the initial approach that might just be the way to get new people into this sport.

And I thought I was quite competent in what I was doing. Just goes to show, even arrogant persons such as I, have lots to learn.

Thank you Henry for your constructive input!!
Regards,
Don

Now , pick out what you can sail. Fair dinkum. Something you can get your hands on , readily.  The first bloke along is going to ask you the fatal question and you must have an answer. Like , Where do you get it. If you can't answer that question , then you are in BIG TROUBLE straight away. So know where you can get a boat for him/ where he can get one/ Preferable. So you have another body. Start threeway match racing. Till the next bloke shows up and then you just let it flow The one cardinal rule is DON"T SELL THE HOBBY/ Sport. let the boats do it. Make the sailing interesting. Get a few sailing terms in you speech and things like that so he knows you don't sail helicopters.

Ah Ha, I'm on to you Maverick. Doing a "backdoor Charlie" You want to know our secret herbs and formulas?

Its all about doing IT. Just grab a mate and start sailing. Pick out in your area a puddle or a sailing club or a stretch of water that has a rowing club or a social club where you can get people to talk about doing STUFF. The invite them to do IT.

Now all clubs start off with two Mavericks sailing boats Together. Keep going thru wind and rain, Snow or Sleet but the model yachts must go thru.

I am looking for any suggestions that can be implemented at private individual, or local informal group members, to help promote radio yachting in this country, especially Victoria.

I know about Supermarket/Community Notice Boards, local Community Newspapers, Website presence, and I don't know about others, but I am not financially in a position to place ads in newspapers. All the others I can manage, and have already done to varying degrees.

Why does Queensland have such a strong presence? Why does NSW have a reasonably strong presence?

But why do the other States have virtually no presence? What is Queensland's and NSW's secret?
