I had a long chat with Steve yesterday and Im happy to report his progress is coming along nicely, his speech is improving albeit a little too slow for Steve.
As John reported previously, Steve has been issued with a restricted driving licence enabling him to get out and about to attend the different sailing clubs throughout the in Sydney area. Steve is sailing his Nordic, IOM and Marblehead on a weekly basis.
Steve also competed in the recent NSW Marblehead State Title finishing tenth. Given the length of time he has been unable to sail Steve was very pleased with his placing and is looking forwarded to more competitions.
We had a great chat and it was good to catch up on all the news while I had been in Qld. There may be a lot of movement in the Radio Sailing world and if successful, will certainly benefit all concerned.
I will post the link for the NSW Marblehead State Tile as soon as available.
Your observations are similar to mine. Steve's mind is still as active as it ever was. But Steve does have some difficulty expressing those thoughts verbally.
But rehabilitation is working wonders, and I think soon will be his old self again!
What a beautiful fighting spirit exists in our friend Steve!
My best wishes to you Steve, my friend!
Don

Needed to pass on my Wishes for his Recovery & decided it was finally time I made contact. Thank you ARYA for publishing his contact details.
All things being equal he is rehabilitating rather well. His speech is coming along if only the words in his head could come out as clearly as he would like.
I sensed his frustrations, but he does OK..
Small trips in the car & sailing where he can. Hopefully we will see him posting again sometime soon. His Computer is Kaput at the moment..
I think what I would like to see are some posts here on the forum detailing some of the experiences people have had with Steve & maybe a small list (it may grow) of his achievements & contributions over his many years in the Sport.
That Photo of his KIa KIa & the caption convinces me he's been at this a very long time..
An expansion on his exploits would be of great assistance.. For my part I can only assist with any wording & formatting a proposal may need to take. Somebody else may need to take the mantle of proposer..
Maybe the odd small post from Steve if he can handle it would be good therapy for him. Filling in the gaps of when he started etc.
Cheers
John

Here goes something out of left Field.. Don't know the Old Codger well.. But with all that Steve seems to have done and achieved ove rmany years in this Radio Sailing game, why hasn't anybody ever put his name forward for Life Fellowship of the ARYA.
For me just reading some of what Steve has done with his passion for the History of the Sport & the Boats, I would be the first to say something seriously needs to be done here to recognise a great man of the sport. What less than Life Fellowship would be appropriate..
OK he may have got a bit grumpy of late, who wouldn't after a Massive Stroke & the daily struggles he now faces , but in anybody's opinion this certainly wouldn't diminish his vast contributions over many years, .
I suppose being realtively new & nameless in this caper, I really dont know much, but there are better people than me that can & should put justice to Steve's achievements & contributions.
How about somebody or everybody putting words together & lets get our Longstanding Historian & resident Grumpy Old Man recognised in a Proper Way...
A Grass Roots swell of Support should see Steve's name added to a very small & select group.
How about some History on the Historian..

I was rapt today when I had the chance to speak with Steve. It was an absolute pleasure and we shall do that again, not leaving it so long between chats this time!!
Steve is fit and well, and his speech is improving every day!! And, the best thing is, he is still sailing, so I shall be able to pump him for more up to date sailing tips!!
An absolute pleasure Steve, and I look forward to speaking with you again very soon!
Look after yourself mate, and take care my friend!
Regards, Don

I'm sorry I missed your calls. I was not in a position to respond within a reasonable time and I did not want to bother you out of hours, so to speak.
But with your patience, I will call you on Monday around the same time you called me, unless that is not convenient for you.
I am so rapt that you were able to call. And you know what Steve! We have had some monumentally huge disagreements at times, but the final result has ended up in a friendship with you that is extremely important and valuable to me.
And to me, that is the sign of true friendship. When one friend can say to another things that might destroy forever, lesser friendships, and after many trials and tribulations, I hugely respect you for the man you are, even if still to this day we may still have differences of opinion on some things!
Steve, I still expect you to challenge me when you think I am wrong, but I do take a sneaking delight that in many respects you not only came to appreciate my point of view, but sometimes even actively promoted it. But that is not why I appreciate your friendship.
Your friendship to me is important because like me, I guess, you undertand that sometimes people need to be shaken up a little in order to get something happening!
I have, due to many factors, not been involved in the Model Yachting scene, for the last 18 months - 2 years!. Even 3-4 years. But I have never..., not even once, lost my passion for sailing my boats.
Steve, if you ever feel you want to contribute here, to this forum, please feel free to say what you want. All posts unless personal attacks, will not be censored in any way. And that applies to all members.
Anything goes, except personal attacks.
Steve, I know you have a fighting spirit, my dear friend, and I hope to see your contributions in future.
Steve, take care. I will ring you Monday!!! :)
Regards, Don

I would like to take this opportunity to focus on a point Don has raised relating to Steve incredable bank of knowledge surrounding the all things related to model yachting in his country.
Like Don, Steve has taught me so much and yet he has barely scratched the surface. It is gents like Steve that we need in this sport for without them, history is forgotten all to easily.
Once Steve is up to the challenge, I would like to sit down with him and record his endless memories. Regardless of the time this may take,,,,, so don't think you're off the hook just yet Steve!
I'm well enough. Able R/C yachting. I looking forward to modelling again. I have take 10 rater. Alike a Marblehead (Waliki) , Soling, RC laser,IOM, Nautic 12 metre

It is sad to hear, but knowing this cussed man, he will not entertain any pity, or ask anyone to make 'allowances' for what has happened to his physical body.
Especially as he will still give each and every one of us a run for our money.
Many of you will know, that over the years, Steve and I have had, what may politely be described as an 'colourful relationship'.
But over about the last 5 or 6 years or so, I believe we came to an understanding of mutual respect, so much so, that at one stage I asked Steve, if I could count on him as being a real friend. Steve answered very positively, in the affirmative.
The reason I cannot quote his words, is that I was both shocked, ...and moved, ...that what was once a relationship of the most venemous nature, had now become one of a great friendship...
And the catalyst for this change? Steve had demonstrated that he was prepared to listen to another point of view. Whether I agreed with him or not, it mattered not. The important thing was that, ...finally, ...sorry Steve, :)), Stephen Crewes was prepared to listen to another point of view. And that's all it takes to get this sport back on keel, so to speak!
Steve, you better get better, and soon mate, for there is still so much you have to teach me!!!
My deepest regards, Don

For those who may not be aware, Steve's health has not been terrible good for some time now and unfortunately this has culminated with a Stroke last year.
As you may know, the road to recovery is a lengthy one given the degree of severity suffered. Thanks to his family, friends and his dogged determination, Steve is steadily progressing with exception to a degree of difficulty with speech.
To keep busy, Steve has been sorting his boat house and removed all things not related to RC Yachting; dusted off his fine collection of vintage model yachts and conducted a rigorous maintance program on his Nordic 12, 10R, Soling and Laser.
With fresh interest Steve has been sailing at local clubs in the Sydney region and most recently competed with his Walicki M/10R.
For me the best news has been Steve's announcement that he has decided to complete and publish his book, titled "Australian Marbleheads". This is fantastic news for all Marblehead skippers or those with a keen interest in all things Vintage.
