RE: Future of the Australian EC12 Class

Hi guys - after sitting back and watching for a while from the other side of the Tasman I offer some comments as an interested party.

I have been in the position of running the NZ EC12OA in the past and know how frustrating it can be to keep communication and information flowing to the interested few. A week ago I sat down with Straw over here and we had a good chat about how things have denigrated to a stand still as the ARYA have appeared to fail their own constitution and failed this class.

I am one who ahs made an effort to bring my boat over to QLD in recent times and sailed at an AUS Nationals. I also travelled to the US in 2009 - as did Straw - to attend the Morgan Black which kicked off here in NZ in 2006. Now due to apathetic attitudes and lack of action the event is now postponed a year as AUS was due to host this tri-annual event in 2013. Disappointing is the least I can say from a Kiwi perspective and I know numerous of the yanks are also highly disappointed in the lack of action.

My main comment is - get the OA cranking - get a strong team to run it - it can't be done by a team of 1 (Straw) Hopefully a big broom will find a new level of support at the next ARYA AGM and allow the class to again flourish.

I look forward to coming over there again with my 12.

Chris

I'm always one to look outside the square. I usually see things that are in some way faulty & unhinged by years of nothing seeming wrong & therefore nothing needs doing.

If it Ain't Broke Don't Fix It.

The problem is the maintenance then gets neglected & the only time things get noticed is when there is a HUGE FAILURE..

Life is like this in so many ways.

I suppose the Idea of State Class Coordinators is an Association & Class Model rather than a State One..

At least you only have 1 NCC for everybody with their responsibility to deal with Class issues.. Like I said mostly should be a guidance & mentor style position. ie Learn from the mistakes of other classes & maybe guide some workable solutions.

It would provide a clear link to the executive from each class.. A more direct link from Member to Executive. And it works within the ARYA Constitution..

The States are still there with taking a broad view of things as a whole. There would then never  be a perception that one class gets preference over another, as sometimes happens at the moment.,,in theory

Like I said being outside the square leaves me freedom to explore possibilities & spitball ideas, without the constraints of personalities & prejudices by past deeds.

Happy to keep putting things out there for consideration & discussion.. Not sure if any are possible but at least there is something that might be worth looking into..

Cheers

John

Good comments John,

The first suggestion I would make is to have the former NCC reinstated. The class has no leadership and is rudderless at present and as long as this situation exists, progress will be nonexistent or difficult to say the least.

Join in and share your ideas.

OK here is something from Left Field.. I know & hear your frustrations..

If the previous NCC were not reinstated... Would you consider putting your hand up as the NCC in the short term & see if some action might be prompted. Then in January a re-election & ballot by all EC12 owners to put a permanet name forward.

I think & hope that Straw & others might be prepared to school you up on some of the important issues & perhaps the guys might see a positive in having something & somebody..

I had also thought something along teh lines of a Single NCC for all classes much like the Technical Officer..

All Tech Issues regardless of class are always direct to the Tech Officer.. Could this not work for the NCC's with each State & Territory have a Local Liaison Officer..

The Local guys talk to local members & meet with the other states to air view openly then submit a combined report/ submission to the NCC coordinator for discussion at the Executive level if needed.

You could call these guys SCC's

In this way the members are heard & consensus is reached before the final hurdle. Such approvals in the end should be mere formality & rubber stamp. As all the hard work is done.

Food for Thought ???

aww

Like I said I don't own an EC12.. So maybe my opinion is worthless.. Who Knows.. It would be nice to hear a few more ideas so that suggestions & ideas can be exchanged & maybe a LightBulb moment could present itself.

I think EC12 is the  tip of the iceberg..

Are 10R, A's & M's next.... They are in decline from where they were 20 years ago. How long have they left..

Let one class go & another is easier to follow.. Just look at what happened once Bank Branches got closed. Soon there was a flood & now you would be lucky to find one in the suburbs.

I really feel for you guys & I hope that Clear Heads & common sense can be found.

Even if it comes to allowing Both Moulds to be used would be better than defuncting a class in Australia.. Would that satisfy the detractors? Let new skippers decide which one they prefer..

The MM Class had to adjust & amended rules to compensate for when the MK2 version came out. Now the Older Boats can race in harmony side by side.  The NEW RTR version will also need to be looked at..

We even have Countries that sail by Local Rules as well as the International ones.

If a Toy Boat can find ways to move things forward surely the Bigger & Better Classes can do the same.

I wish you all the luck in the world...

Not sure what you could do. Only live with the Split Class for a while. It's not ideal but may be necessary to go it alone.

If the opposition is so entrenched & the ARYA are not prepared to assist in finding proper resolution & common ground then I see there being a huge problem.

Those that indicated support then withdrew without reason need to stand by their conviction. And should be open to Publicly air their views with proper consideration given from those who have opposing views. It;s what makes a democracy great..

I hate this entrenched silence & backdoor Politics in the ARYA. It needs to change before the whole system, is corrupted by the same silence .

Like they say you don't know what you don't know..

I think that they think by doing nothing things will stay the same. I see this in a lot of classes..

Maybe it is time to show that things need changing & move ahead in spite of the detractors.

I only hope taht some will see sense & find common ground.

Surely the New Mould & Final product is not that Different than what is currently available. Albeit from readings on the class bith here & overseas the current moulding do not appear to meet acceptable standards.. That is not to say they should be thrown out but there needs to be a look at where the class is at the moment & were it wants to head in the future.

The Past needs to be acknowledged but then put aside & move things forward in a positive manner.

My fear however is the ARYA as a functioning organisation is slowly & inevitably in decline. Number may grow but not in percentage of population. And the age is getting older each year. Soon very soon there will be nothing left to squabble over.

Unless somebody decides to go it alone tehn there may be nothing left when the time comes..

Strike Now or Loose the Opportunity..
